Whilst studying at Uni I worked part time on the checkouts at a branch of Waitrose to pay for books etc.
My contract was to work on the checkouts and occasionally help out on the shop floor.
One night, in the winter when it was pitch dark outside, I was asked by management to complete an unusual task - walk around the estate and retrieve abandoned trolleys. I argued this was not in my job description, which they accepted.
On my last day, when I was leaving due to moving to another job elsewhere, I was given a nice farewell by colleagues. When I came to cash up they found my till (which was used by several people that day) was £100 down. I was told I was not allowed to leave the building, not even allowed to contact the family member waiting to pick me up by car outside and had my locker searched followed by a full body search - they appeared to think I'd stolen the money and hidden it on my person. 3/4 of an hour later I was allowed to leave.
I received a letter a week later stating they found it was an administrative error and there was no money missing after all - but NO apology for anything they had done in their treatment of me and no apology even for the error! The letter simply stated there was an admin error!
Not the best company I've worked for, to say the least.
What made me recall this was reading in the news recently that Waitrose were going to ask employees to pay back time for self-isolating if they were ill - which they then backtracked on!
